Freear & Fitch is a boutique garden design firm offering a complete service from garden design, to garden construction and ongoing garden maintenance.

Working with private and commercial clients across Essex and Suffolk we create imaginative and thoughtful gardens that are not simply beautiful but also enriching to those that spend time in them.

Our starting point is always the interpretation of your site – in particular its mood or atmosphere. We trace this in its geography, accompanying architecture, aspect, history, narrative, flora and any other unique features identified.

We work hard to understand how you want to use your outdoor space, practically what you want it to provide you with and emotionally how you want it to make you feel.

Many clients start with good ideas as to what they want, some want elements of drama and excitement whilst others simply want pared back relaxed spaces for quiet contemplation; this is what we will discover with you.

Our extensive plant knowledge, derived from years of growing and experimenting with plants and obsessively visiting gardens, ensures that plants are used creatively and appropriately to the site conditions.

We believe gardens are an important part of our environment and can greatly enhance the biodiversity of an area and work hard to specify plants that contribute to the natural environment.

Nicole Freear
Partner

Nicole worked for many years in communications consultancy and advertising before returning to her first love of plants and gardening.

With both parents as horticulturalists many formative years were spent on the family nursery learning the basics of propagation and accumulating an extensive knowledge of herbaceous plants and their growth habits.

She graduated from Writtle University College with a Garden Design Diploma (Distinction) before partnering with Sophie to form Freear & Fitch Garden Design. A member of Plant Heritage she is passionate about plant conservation and biodiversity.

Her original MA in Geography from the University of Cambridge ensures the team has a thorough understanding of the importance of place and has yet to get lost en-route to a client meeting!

She has excellent commercial experience in project management, ensuring budgets and deadlines are met.

Sophie Fitch
Partner

A passionate and experienced plantswoman,  Sophie started her professional life working in the quintessentially English Country gardens of Gravetye Manor in West Sussex where she became Assistant Head Gardener. Prior to that she had qualified with a National Diploma in Horticulture including work experience at
Kew Gardens.

After moving to Essex to bring up a family, Sophie continued to work with a number of private commissions. Keen to develop her design skills and her innate sense of colour and form, she enrolled at the Oxford College of Garden Design where she attained a Distinction in Residential Landscape Architecture.

Sophie is always happy to get stuck in due to her love of horticulture, and is as handy with a mallet as she is skilled on the drawing board. Like the Prince of Wales she is happiest when talking to plants and leaves the conversation to the communications expert Nicole!
